Care of Fine Pewter
Sri Lankan Pewter we use a European-Style pewter alloy that comes quite close to Brittania metal, containing 93% Tin with Antimony and Copper as the only other ingredients. Our products are Lead-free and food-safe.
Over time most metals will oxidize. Silver and Brass will develop a patina with age that is often deliberately left untouched on antique objects. We have deliberately oxidized our objects before polishing them so as to provide contrast and enhance the details, also to give them a faux “antique” look.
In medieval days, pewter was often coated with beeswax to keep it shiny. We do not recommend using abrasive compounds such as “Silvo” or “Brasso” to shine Pewter, as these cleaners contain acid and will reduce the detail. Also the acid in them will cause a reaction with metal. Rather you should use soap and water, then a gentle rub with a soft cloth will restore the shine. If you are really worried about the appearance, Turpentine works wonders when applied with a soft cloth.
