Founded in 1989 by Malaysia’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP), the Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre plays a vital role in protecting Malaysia’s endangered Asian elephants.
This sanctuary is home to the Elephant Relocation Team, established in 1974, which has successfully rescued and relocated over 600 wild elephants from threatened habitats across Peninsular Malaysia, including Taman Negara.
Today, the centre serves as both a rescue facility and a permanent home for several orphaned and retired elephants. Visitors are encouraged to learn about the animals’ plight, the challenges of human–elephant conflict, and the importance of habitat conservation.
A short educational video showcases the remarkable elephant translocation missions carried out by the team. It’s an inspiring and eye-opening experience for wildlife lovers.
Located in Bukit Rengit, Lanchang, Deerland Park is a charming privately run wildlife park that opened to the public in 2004. Here, you can get up close with four species of deer, including the Sambar deer, Mouse deer, East Asian deer, and Indonesian deer.
The park also houses a variety of other animals such as:
Golden Pheasant
Crested Fireback Pheasant
Sun Conure parrots
Ferrets
A local Batek Python
A short nature trail and feeding activities make this an enjoyable stop for families and animal enthusiasts.
Your journey continues to Kuala Selangor, a peaceful town rich in history and natural beauty. Visit Bukit Melawati, a scenic hilltop offering panoramic views of the coastline, ancient rainforest, and historic sites including:
The Altingsburg Lighthouse
Remains of an old hilltop fort
The legendary “100 Steps” execution block
Friendly silvered leaf monkeys roam freely here, often approaching visitors for peanuts.
In the evening, head to Bukit Belimbing, home to one of the largest firefly colonies in the world. After a relaxing dinner at a riverside restaurant, board a traditional boat and glide along the quiet mangrove river.
Watch thousands of fireflies flicker like glowing Christmas lights on the riverbanks—an enchanting natural spectacle you’ll never forget.
Located just outside Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves is one of Malaysia’s most iconic cultural and spiritual landmarks. The limestone formations are estimated to be 400 million years old, and the site features three main cave temples.
Climb the 272 colorful steps leading to the Temple Cave, where Hindu shrines and dramatic cave formations await. At the entrance stands the world’s tallest Lord Murugan statue, soaring 42.7 meters (130 feet) high.
Batu Caves becomes especially lively during Thaipusam, a significant Hindu festival held annually in January or February, attracting millions of devotees and tourists.
